Plastic Surgery More Popular Than Ever in 2011

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) released new statistics based on last year’s plastic surgery numbers yesterday, and they show that despite the still-recovering economy, more and more Americans are seeking out plastic surgery in this second decade of the 21st Century. Last year, for the second year in a row, the number of cosmetic procedures increased significantly—this time by 2 percent, for a total of 13.8 million procedures in all (up from 2010’s 13.1 million). According to Malcolm Z. Roth, MD, the president of the ASPS, this increase can largely be attributed to the fact that consumers today are more placing more confidence in plastic surgery than ever before.

Looking at the most popular surgical cosmetic procedures for 2011, it’s interesting to note that tummy tucks are no longer in the top five—their number five spot has been usurped by face lifts, which increased in popularity by 5 percent last year. Here are some other interesting statistics uncovered by the ASPS:

  • The number of chin augmentations almost doubled in 2011 from 2010, with 21,000 total procedures performed (partly due to the fact that it’s a popular procedure among male patients)

  • Lip augmentations increased by 49 percent (more than 25,000 performed)

  • The use of hyaluronic acid soft tissue fillers, such as Restylane and Juvederm, increased by 9 percent (more than 1.3 million procedures performed)
